Undergraduate Research
and Independent Study

Albright’s personal touch allows students to pursue interests with the support of their faculty.  Specifically, students have several options for learning more about a topic of choice.  These options include:

Albright’s Creative Research Experience (ACRE)

The ACRE program is based on faculty-student collaboration.  Students may engage in an ACRE project in the summer (10 weeks) or during the Interim semester (3.5 weeks).

Faculty and students submit a grant application to a committee on campus.  If awarded, the grant pays students and faculty a stipend and includes funding for materials and sometimes travel.

Student projects in our department in the past have included:

“Sense of Community and Reading’s Economic Development,” Mike Thompson ’07, Econ/Political Science

“Comparison of Wage Differentials in the Former East and West Germany,”  Nick Loris ’06, Political Science/Econ/Finance  Presented at Eastern Economics Association Meetings and published in Issues in Political Economy

“The Impact of Unionization in Transition Countries: Lessons from Estonia,” Fred Eiswert ’05, Psychology/Business Presented at the Society for the Advancement of Management Conference and published in proceedings

“The Gender Wage Differential in Four Transition Countries,” Meghan Hennessey ’03, Economics/Math Presented at the International Atlantic Economics Association Meetings

For more information about how to apply, see the ACRE program. The first step is almost always to talk to a faculty member with whom you share an interest.

THE SENIOR THESIS

Seniors in Albright’s honors program are required to write a senior honors thesis in at least one of their concentrations.

In addition, students with a minimum GPA of 3.5 in their major and 3.25 overall may complete a thesis to graduate “With Distinction” in at least one of their concentrations.

This process typically begins in the spring of the junior year with the identification of a thesis adviser, committee and topic.  A more formal proposal is due in the early fall of the senior year.

The finale of the senior thesis is a presentation of each thesis on campus during honors week in late April.

For more information, see the Honors Program.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

Finally, students have the option to create a course of their own through Albright’s independent study program.  The first step to the creation of an independent study course is to talk to your faculty member and establish course guidelines.  For more information about requirements, see our catalog.
